PETA Takes Issue With Pokémon

October 25, 2012 Leave a comment

I’m sort of finding this hard to believe, but it looks like the (in)famous animal rights group, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, (PETA) has launched a vicious campaign against Pokémon, saying that the series condones animal cruelty and that its creatures are treated like abused animals. They’ve released Pokémon Black and Blue, a parody game with the tagline “gotta free ’em all,” in which players take on the role of Pikachu as he fights against his trainers for liberation You can play the game on their website.

I won’t reinvent the wheel here–you can read more about the whole thing at and/or CNET, both of which have posted articles on this development. This isn’t the first time PETA has attacked a video game series, but what really gets me is that they waited nearly fifteen years before making their move! As the meme below illustrates, the Pokémon series made its worldwide debut in 1998, yet it was not until this month–October 2012–that PETA decided it was a threat. Seriously, PETA? Seriously?

Happy 25th birthday, Street Fighter!

September 1, 2012 Leave a comment

Street Fighter–quite possibly the most famous fighter in video game history–was released on August 30, 1987. That means it’s now officially 25 years old! Wow! I’ve never really been much of a player myself, but I have to admit that it’s pretty fun to watch and almost impossible not to respect. It’s also pretty hard to ignore its impact on popular culture–it’s been spun off into movies and cartoons while still managing to evolve as a series and maintaining its place as a beloved video game franchise. Happy birthday, Street Fighter. Here’s to another 25 years!
